Turtle Monitoring (November - January)
Play an active role in monitoring the local Flatback Turtle population during this rewarding travel experience from only $1120 per person!
With the guidance of Conservation Volunteers Australia's marine species research assistants, volunteers spend their time patrolling sections of the beach gathering scientific data on the species.
There will also be time to relax and take in some of Australia's most spectacular coastal views, or enjoy many of the activities offered at Eco Beach Resort.
This is a truly remarkable experience and a rare opportunity to connect with our natural world.
The aim of these programs is to conduct consecutive nights of monitoring for nesting turtles to determine species and populations, and to monitor nest predation, beach dynamics and hatchling success rates.
This project as a whole also meets objectives outlined in Australian state and federal management and recovery plans for Australian sea turtles.
Nesting / tagging program (November - December)
Beach patrols involve track and nest counts during the evening and early hours of the morning. Patrols will either walk from the resort or drive to the main nesting area, patrol for approximately 3 hours, sleep overnight in tents before returning to the resort in the morning. We recommend bringing a sleeping bag or light sheet to use during night patrols.
Grade: medium. Includes 7km of daily beach walking during the night and early hours of the morning in hot climatic conditions.
Tasks include:
- Recording nest and track data
- Tagging and measuring turtles
